Many ask us about the curatorship of Cine Esquema Novo: it is not easy to explain, but it is also not difficult. We are not a thematic festival, but we are also not generic.

We are explaining to you,
to confuse you.
We are confusing you,
To enlighten you.

When we watch the 703 subscribers, we look for a light to guide us. We gently put our proposal, close our eyes and see this curatorship. We think of those who identify with CEN and what they would like to see. But also in what they have no idea they can find, because surprise has always been in our DNA. We are happy with the films we choose, and also sensitive to the reality around us. And that reality is in the works we choose, so that despair gives way to affection.

A delicious and radical fruit salad,
that is served by the struggles of each day.
Making our position clear
of non-accommodation in the face of it all,
after all, this is no small feat,
and it’s all that and more.

And there is no need for a rhyme in art when what we want to talk about is feminism, colonialism, empowerment and black representation, current politics, survival and exploitation of religiosity, burning questions to the original peoples, belonging, immigration, memory, accessibility, queer identity and the our identity, which represents, through the audiovisual, a Brazil in a moment of disruption.

It is not the speech for the speech,
is how this discourse transits
between brains and fists,
eyes and cameras,
big and small screens,
so as to enchant even in barbarism.

Poetry at such a time can also, but it is not alone, because the audiovisual is the mirror of society and its idiosyncrasies, it is our travel ticket, the bridge and the port.

So let’s go now and say goodbye, so we can go back.

The Cine Esquema Novo 2019 - Brazilian Audiovisual Art takes place between November 21st and 27th, with activities at the Cinemateca Capitólio Petrobras, Goethe-Institut Porto Alegre, Hub Criativa Birô, Photography Laboratory IA / UFRGS and Theater Quilombo das Artes Utopia e Luta . There are four exhibitions, Business Rounds, two workshops and a seminar that are part of the event's program, which in 2019 reaches its 13th edition.

The Competitive Exhibition Brazil opens its program at 6:30 pm with the films Thinya, by Lia Letícia, Untitled # 5: The Routine will have its While, by Carlos Adriano and the unprecedented performance of the Duo Strangloscope, Aymberê, which integrates a trilogy started in Carcará, presented in 2018 in a show signed by the duo from Santa Catarina. The work is carried out using analog multiprojectors with live digital sound monitoring that brings together altered, painted film materials, scratched with the theme of the original peoples against the social injustices that have affected us since the times of the "discovery" of Brazil until today.

The Competitive Exhibition Brazil presents 33 works, 28 of them shown in a movie theater, a performance at the Cinemateca Capitólio Petrobras and four video installations exhibited at the Goethe-Institut Porto Alegre, co-director of CEN 2019. Themes such as feminism, empowerment and black representativeness, current politics, colonialism, indigenous issues, belonging, memory, immigration, queer identity, accessibility, among others, guide the selected titles of ten Brazilian states and four productions signed by Brazilians carried out abroad (or international co-production). The Competitive Exhibition Brazil will award at the end of the event the Grand Prize Cine Esquema Novo 2019, with a trophy signed by Luiz Roque, created especially for CEN, as well as awards in services from Locall, KF Studios, TECNA / PUCRS and Fluxo - Escola de Photography and Cinema. This year’s jury consists of director Camila Leichter, art critic and curator Gabriela Motta and actor and director Silvero Pereira.

“In this broad panorama of the recent authorial and independent production in the country, it is quite clear that it will be an extremely positioned and political edition”, affirm the curators who sign the selection, Gustavo Spolidoro, Jaqueline Beltrame, Ramiro Azevedo and Vinicius Lopes. The list includes titles such as A crystallization of Brasília, by Guerreiro do Divino Amor, an artist awarded with the 2019 Pipa Prize and who participates for the second time in the festival; Swinguerra, produced to represent Brazil at the 58th Venice Biennale and Rise, winner of Berlinale’s best short film in 2018, both by Bárbara Wagner and Benjamin de Burca, can also be seen by the audience of CEN 2019. Brasiliense, based in Recife, and German, also based in the capital of Pernambuco, are known for researching the complex relationships between popular cultural manifestations, identity, body and gender.

While we are here, by Clarissa Campolina and Luiz Pretti, she talks about two immigrants in New York, in a hybrid narrative built by a poetic approach through a travel diary that takes us to the essence of human micropolitics in times of globalization: an uncertain kingdom of desire, hope and fears. With Grace Passô, Marcelo Souza e Silva and Mary Ghattas in the cast, the production debuted at this year’s Rotterdam Festival. The short Caçador, by Leonardo Sette, is also on the list, bringing his work with the indigenous theme to the selection of CEN.

Jonathas de Andrade and Felipe Bragança (in partnership with Catarina Wallenstein) who have had works exhibited in other editions of the festival, also participate in this edition of the event, with Directed Games and Bring Me the Head of Carmen M. In Directed Games, commissioned work for his first solo show at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago, Andrade presents the community of Várzea Queimada, in the interior of Piauí. The artist decided to work with the broad deaf population of the village and centered the film around new forms of exchange and communication, capturing people interacting through targeted games and highlighting the powerful expressions they exchange. Directed in partnership with the protagonist Catarina Wallenstein, Bring me the head of Carmen M debuted earlier this year at the Rotterdam Festival and circulated in Tiradentes and IndieLisboa, among other events. The film tells the story of Ana, an actress who rehearses to star in a kind of musical in which she will play Carmen Miranda, in a delirium that seeks to reflect on the socio-political chaos in which Brazil finds itself, seeking aesthetic references in tropicalism and in surrealism to combine them with the strong influence of Rogério Sganzerla’s cinema.

Also noteworthy is Corre Quem Pode, Dança Quem Aguenta and Jah Intervention by an actor and performer from Guinea-Bissau Welket Bungué, who presents a discussion on institutionalized violence in Brazil. The only director in RS to be part of the Competitive Exhibition Brazil, Rodrigo John presents Mirante, a film produced over ten years from the view of his apartment on the 17th floor of a building in the Historic Center of Porto Alegre.

The public will be able to check out two films with accessible sessions at Cinemateca Capitólio Petrobras: on November 23, at 2 pm, the feature Raia 4 will be shown and on 27, at 2 pm, while we are here.

The novelty of this year is the Mostra Outros Esquemas (Other Schemes), which has 15 productions that will be exhibited at the Cinemateca Capitólio Petrobras from November 22nd. The show arises from a desire by the CEN 2019 curators’ team to contemplate a space of expression different from the Brazil Competitive Exhibition, but which made their eyes shine. “Every year we receive works that arouse a lot of interest, that we really wanted to see at the festival, but that, because we have a curatorial proposal, let’s say, almost thematic (after all, we have the subtitle “Arte Audiovisual Brasileira”), we ended up with a lot of regret not selecting. That is how the Other Schemes came about, to show these films that we like very much and that, precisely at a time when our cinema suffers attacks and risks, they should gain more space to express themselves ”, they reveal. The 15 films compete for the public vote and the production chosen as Best Film will receive awards for services from Locall and TECNA / PUCRS.

An overview of university production in Rio Grande do Sul and Lebanon is also part of the CEN 2019 program. They are the Audiovisual shows in Course and BASE-Lebanon. On Friday, November 22, at 4 pm, the public will be able to check out four productions by five Lebanese filmmakers, through the Base-Lebanon University Exhibition that presents a meeting between processes, among the filmmakers looks and their first films, which opened up to other forms -cinema, less conventional, contaminated by the temporality and materiality of the experience, sometimes brutal, and its subtleties. These titles are signed by students from the AUL Kaslik film school in Lebanon, curated by BASE-film, a collaborative audiovisual production platform based on procedural image-building practices, led by Brazilians Camila Leichter, Mauro Espíndola and the Lebanese Ali Khodr.

On the weekend, on the 23rd and 24th, the Goethe-Institut Porto Alegre receives the second edition of the Audiovisual Exhibition in Course, which is curated by 19 students from seven courses of audiovisual realization, visual arts, communication and animation from five institutions do RS: Crav / Unisinos, Teccine / PUCRS, Fabico and Institute of Arts / UFRGS, Audiovisual and Animation / UFPEL and Audiovisual / Uniritter. The exhibition will bring together 38 works selected by the student-curators. In addition to the exhibition, the exhibition will have debates between the curators and the directors of the selected films. The novelty in 2019 is that the show becomes competitive and has the vote of the public, who will choose not their favorite film, but the best session, thus valuing the students; curatorial process. Fluxo Escola de Fotografia e Cinema will award prizes to the group of curators chosen by the Popular Jury.

Between the 21st and 24th of November, the second edition of the Seminar Pensar a Imagem takes place at the Goethe-Institut Porto Alegre. Curated and produced by the researcher and university professor Gabriela Almeida, the seminar aims to address theoretical, technical, conceptual, narrative and circulation specificities associated with the authorial and experimental production of images in the 21st century. Four tables will be held with the transversal theme of the implications between aesthetics and politics in contemporary cinema and the arts.

The Seminar will bring together eight Brazilian and foreign guests, including the French Cinematheque programmer Bernard Payen; the project manager for arsenal distribution (Germany), Angelina Ramlow; the actor, playwright and director Silvero Pereira (film “Bacurau” and the play “BR-Trans); the curator at the Rio Grande do Sul Museum of Art (MARGS) Izis Abreu and the producer and programmer Paulo de Carvalho, Brazilian based in Berlin, partner of Autentika Films Berlin and curator of Cinelatino for Germany; the Master in Education, with research in cinema and education and founding member of the Cineclube Academia das Musas Juliana Costa; the doctoral student in communication at UFRGS, researcher and works at the intersection between cinema and gender studies Dieison Marconi and the artist, essayist and researcher Ali do Espírito Santo. The Seminar was created out of a free association with the Think: Film International Experimental Cinema Congress, part of the Berlin Film Festival and organized by the Arsenal Institut für Film und Videokunst. Another novelty this year is the festival’s Business Rounds, which are open until November 12 through the Cine Esquema Novo website. The rounds take place between the 25th and 26th of November, with players from Brazil and Germany. The activity seeks authorial audiovisual projects of fiction, documentary, animation and experimental feature films, as well as completed or finalized feature films. The event has Institutional Support from RS Criativo and the State Government of RS, which will host the program, scheduled to take place in the Sérgio Napp room at the Casa de Cultura Mario Quintana, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and support from the Professional Association of Cinematographic Technicians of RS - APTC / RS. Participating in the rounds, in search of projects and films, Angelika Ramlow, project manager for Arsenal Distribution, Argel Medeiros, partner / director of Olhar Distribuição, Letícia Friedrich, partner of the production and distributor Boulevard Filmes and Paulo de Carvalho, partner of Autentika Films Berlin and programmer and artistic director of the CINELATINO Festival in Germany.

Two workshops are part of the event’s program: Causa Camera - Audiovisual Realization for socially vulnerable groups, taught by Gustavo Spolidoro and Lucas Heitor, who has already closed the enrollment, and the Workshop Working with 16mm film, with Luciana Mazeto and Vinícius Lopes . The Camera Causa Workshop is aimed at people who belong to or work with social projects and groups in social vulnerability, teachers and students from public schools and the general public, providing a reflection and practice of audiovisual realization from their own cell phones. Created in 2018, with ten editions and eight lectures, the workshop generated more than 60 shorts published on social networks and aims to create content that can be used to publicize the work of these groups, their reality and causes. On Monday, November 25, at 2:00 pm, there will be an exhibition of short films produced during the activity at the Cinemateca Capitólio Petrobras, with free admission.

On the 25th and 26th of November, the directors Luciana Mazeto and Vinicius Lopes give the workshop Working handcrafted with 16mm film at the Photography Laboratory of the UFRGS Institute of Arts. The workshop will cover simple, manual and experimental techniques for filming, developing and copying 16mm film. Filmmakers Luciana Mazeto and Vinicius Lopes explore the development of black and white negatives with the use of caffeine, an ecological and affordable solution that produces beautiful high-contrast images from easily found ingredients. Then, the participants will work with the copying of this negative using the cyanotype technique in handmade emulsion, applying the emulsion itself on the film and generating beautiful positive images in bluish tones, ready for exhibition.

Tickets for the Competitive Brazil, Other Schemes and BASE-Lebanon sessions, at the Cinemateca Capitólio Petrobras, cost R $ 10.00, with the anticipated half-price discounts. At the Goethe-Institut, the works exhibited in the gallery and the sessions of the Audiovisual Exhibition in Course have free admission.

CAMILA LEICHTER: A visual artists and PhD student in Visual Poetics at the Graduate program in Visual Arts-UFRGS, her research is focused on “Field and Counterfield of Experience”, which involves the procedural, immersive and performative aspects of audiovisual practices taking ‘experience’ as a starting point, currently focusing on an old manor beside a ruined mill and its surroundings, located in Picada 48 Baixa - RS. 

GABRIELA KREMER MOTTA: Curator, critic and researcher specialized in visual arts. Currently, she holds a PNPD scholarship in the Graduate program at UFPEL’s Arts Center (2016-2020). She has a PhD in Art Theory, Teaching and learning from USP (2015) and a Master’s degree in Visual Arts from the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul’s Arts Institute (2005). 

SILVERO PEREIRA: Actor, playwright and director. Founder of the As Travestidas collective (Fortaleza- CE). In the theater, he has performed in more than 30 plays and traveled throughout the Brazilian territory with these performances, as well as to the United States and Germany. On TV, he acted in soap opera A Força do Querer and participated in the 2018 edition of Show dos Famosos (a competition on the Domigão do Faustão TV show), in addition to being a mobilizing force behind the Criança Esperança initiative. In film, he acted in films such as "Serra Pelada" (Heitor Dhalia, 2012) and short films "No Fim de Tudo" (Victor Ciríaco, RN), "As Bodas do Diabo" (Ivan Ribeiro, SP) and "Mar de Zila" (RN). More recently, he had a part in "Bacurau", a film by Kleber Mendonça Filho and Juliano Dornelles.
