The idea for the film was born from my first experience in an Ayahuasca ritual. What struck me most was that the ritual was also open to children. They took a very small dose of the tea and actively participated in the activities. It was such a powerful experience for me that I wondered how a child could understand these altered states of consciousness. Months later, I began to research the use of Ayahuasca as a form of knowledge transmission and how it better developed the space of imagination for cultural and social construction within some indigenous cultures. The idea was to make a film that discussed the political power of imagination in a world that increasingly prevents us from dreaming, from designing things for a future. At the same time, it could raise questions about the cultural erasure of certain minorities. What most inspired me in the process of creating the script was the book A Queda do Céu, / The Fall of the sky, by Davi Kopenawa, and the film O Abraço da Serpente / Embrace Of The Serpent, by Ciro Guerra.

4 Bilhões de Infinitos

Sinopsis: Brazil. 2020. A family lives with their electricity having been cut off. While the mother works, her children stay at home talking about having hope.

JUSTIFICATION

4 Bilhões de Infinitos / 4 billion infinites was one of my big surprises in the field of short films in 2020. I already knew the cinema of Marco Antônio Pereira and I found his creative freedom in proposing images loaded with allegories that often evoke the narrative artifice itself impressive. I feel that this last short has many links with O Jardim Fantástico / the fantastic garden. They are two films that start from the children's universe to discuss the transforming power of imagination. The final scene of 4 Bilhões de Infinitos, where children wait for the projection of an image on a white bedsheet, creates an interesting rhyme with the final scene of O Jardim Fantástico, where the boy points his camera to a Chroma Key sleeping bag, waiting for the green to be filled with other worlds in the future. These two films embrace the idea that thinking about a future today is having the possibility to dream.
