Four film exhibitions, business rounds, workshops and seminar are included in the event schedule, to be held at Cinemateca Capitólio Petrobras, Goethe-Institut Porto Alegre, Hub Criativa Birô, Ocupação Utopia e Luta and the Photography Laboratory of UFRGS’s Art Institute.
Cine Esquema Novo 2019 – Arte Audiovisual Brasileira will be held from Nov 21-27 and includes activities to be carried out at Cinemateca Capitólio Petrobras, Goethe-Institut Porto Alegre, Hub Criativa Birô, Laboratório de Fotografia IA/UFRGS and Teatro Quilombo das Artes Utopia e Luta. There will be four film exhibitions, business rounds, two workshops and a seminar included in the schedule of the event, which is in its 13th year.
The Brazil Competitive Exhibition will kick off at 6:30 PM with the screening of Thinya, directed by Lia Letícia, and Sem Título # 5 :A Rotina terá seu Enquanto, by Carlos Adriano in addition to an original performance by Duo Strangloscope, titled Aymberê, which is part of a trilogy initiated with Carcará, performed in 2018 at an exhibition captained by the Santa Catarina duo. This performance is executed by using analog multi-projectors accompanied by live digital sound, as well as materials made with modified, painted and scratched films, featuring the topic of native peoples fighting against the social injustice they have been facing since Brazil has been “discovered” until nowadays.
The Brazil Competitive Exhibition presents 33 works, 28 of which screened in movie theaters, in addition to a live performance at Cinemateca Capitólio Petrobras and four video installations at Goethe-Institut Porto Alegre, co-organizer of the 2019 CEN. Topics such as feminism, Black representativeness and empowerment, current politics, colonialism, native people issues, sense of belonging, memory, immigration, queer identity, accessibility, among many others, are addresses by the works selected from ten Brazilian states, in addition to four works made by Brazilians overseas (or international co-productions). At the end of the event, the Brazil Competitive Exhibition will award the 2019 Cine Esquema Novo Grand Prize, a trophy designed by Luiz Roque especially for CEN, as well as prizes in services from Locall, KF Studios, TECNA/PUCRS and Fluxo - Escola de Fotografia e Cinema. This year’s jury includes director Camila Leichter, art critic and curator Gabriela Motta and actor/director Silvero Pereira.
“In the broad panorama painted by the country’s original and independent productions, it is evident that this will be an extremely political and politically-engaged edition, state curators Gustavo Spolidoro, Jaqueline Beltrame, Ramiro Azevedo and Vinicius Lopes. The list of works includes films such as A cristalização de Brasília, by Guerreiro do Divino Amor, who received the 2019 Pipa Awared and is participating in the festival for the second time; additionally, Swinguerra, produced in order to represent Brazil at the 58th Venice Biennial, and Rise, which won the Audi Short Film Award at the 2018 Berlinale, both directed by Bárbara Wagner and Benjamin de Burca, will also be shown to audienced at the 2019 CEN. Bárbara Wagner, a Brasilia native living in Recife, and German national Benjamin de Burca, who also lives in Recife, are known for researching complex relationships between popular cultural manifestations, identity, body and gender.
Enquanto estamos aqui, by Clarissa Campolina and Luiz Pretti, tells the story of two immigrants in New York City by way a hybrid narrative built with a poetic approach and a travel journal, which takes us to the essence of human micropolitics in times of globalization: an uncertain realm of desire, hopes and fears. Starring Grace Passô, Marcelo Souza e Silva and Mary Ghattas the film made its debut at this year’s Rotterdam Film Festival. Short feature Caçador, directed by Leonardo Sette is a display of his work within the universe of native populations, is also included on the list of films shown at the CEN.
Jonathas de Andrade amd Felipe Bragança (in partnership with Catarina Wallenstein), whose previous have already been shown at other editions of the festival, are also present this year with films Jogos Dirigidos and Tragam-me a cabeça de Carmem M. Jogos Dirigidos, a work commissioned for their first solo exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, Andrade presents the Várzea Queimada locality, in the Piauí countryside. The artist decided to work with the high number of hearing-impaired residents of the village, having centered his film around new ways of exchanging and communicating information, recording people interacting by way of specific games and highlighting the powerful expressions they exchange among themselves. Directed in partnership with leading actor Catarina Wallenstein, Tragam-me a cabeça de Carmem M debuted early this year at the Rotterdam Film Festival, having also been shown at Tiradentes and IndieLisboa, as well as other events. This film tells the story of Ana, an actor rehearsing in order to star in a musical of sorts, in which she will play Carmem Miranda, in a delirium that aims as serving as a reflection upon the social-political chaos Brazil is facing, searching for aesthetic references in Tropicalia and Surrealism and combining them with a strong influence of Rogério Sganzerla’s style of filmmaking.
Other highlights include Corre Quem Pode, Dança Quem Aguenta and Intervenção Jah, by Bissau-Guinean actor and performer Welket Bungué, who presents a discussion on institutionalized violence in Brazil. Rodrigo John, the only Rio Grande do Sul director in the Brazil Competitive Exhibition, presents Mirante, a film produced during the tens years in which he lived in his apartment at the 17th floor of a building located in Porto Alegre’s Historic City Center.
Audiences will be able to watch two films screened at Cinemateca Capitólio Petrobras, in a theater with areas reserved for disabled persons: Raia 4, screened on Nov 23 at 2:00 PM, and Enquanto Estamos Aqui, screened on Nov 27, at 2:00 PM.
A new feature this year is the Outros Esquemas Exhibition, with 15 works that will be screened at Cinemateca Capitólio Petrobras starting Nov 22. This exhibition is the result of the 2019 CEN curating team’s desire to have another space for expression besides the Brazil Competitive Exhibition, but which was just as important. “Each year we receive works that spark our interest - works we really wish to include in the festivals. However, since our curatorship is almost always based on a given topic or theme (after all, “Brazilian Audiovisual Arts” is part of our name), we regretfully end up not selection many works. The result was Outros Esquemas, another exhibition where we could screen films that we really loved and that - because of the attacks and risks faced by our industry - ought to be given a chance so they may convey what they want to express”, they say. Audiences will cast a vote for the 15 films in this exhibition, and the one chosen as Best Picture will receive a prize in services from Locall and TECNA/PUCRS.
A panorama of Lebanon’s and Rio Grande do Sul’s university film production are also part of the 2019 CEN: The Ongoing Audiovisual and the BASE-Lebanon exhibitions. ON Nov 22 at 4:00 PM, audience will be able to watch four productions by five Lebanese directors at the Base-Lebanon University Film Exhibition, which presents an encounter between processes, the directors’ regards and their first films, which were open to new ways of filmmaking, which are less conventional and contaminated by temporality and the materiality of experience (sometimes brutal) as well as its subtleties. These are films directed by students from the AUL Kaslik film school in Lebanon, curated by BASE-film, a collaborative platform for audiovisual productions based on procedural image construction practices, led by Brazilian artists Camila Leichter, Mauro Espíndola and Lebanese artist Ali Khodr.
On Nov 23-24, o Goethe-Institut Porto Alegre will host the second edition of Ongoing Audiovisual Exhibition, which is curated by 19 students from seven audiovisual, visual arts, communication and animation courses from five institutions in the state of Rio Grande do Sul: Crav/Unisinos, Teccine/PUCRS, Fabico and Arts Institute/UFRGS, Audiovisual e Animação/UFPEL and Audiovisual/Uniritter. The exhibition will feature 38 works selected by the students-curators. In addition to the screenings, the exhibition will feature debates between the curators and the filmmakers who directed the selected films. The news in 2019 is that this exhibition is now a competitive exhibition the winner of which is decided by the public, who will not vote on the best film, but on the best session, thus valuing the curating process developed by the students. Fluxo Escola de Fotografia e Cinema will award prizes to the group of curators chosen by the Popular Jury.
From Nov 21-24, Goethe-Institut Porto Alegre will host the second edition of the do Reflecting on Image Seminar. Curated and produced by researcher and university professor Gabriela Almeida, the seminar aims at addressing the theoretical, technical, conceptual, narrative and circulation specificities associated with original and experimental images productions in the 21st century. Four discussion panels will be held, their cross-cutting theme being the implications between aesthetics and politics in contemporary film and the arts.
The seminar will bring together eight Brazilian and foreign guests, including French Cinematheque programmer Bernard Payen; Arsenal Distribution (Germany) project managerAngelina Ramlow; actor, playwright and director Silvero Pereira (“Bacurau” and play “BR-Trans); Rio Grande do Sul Museum of Art (MARGS) curator Izis Abreu and producer-programmer Paulo de Carvalho, a Berlin-based Brazilian, partner at Autentika Films Berlin and curator of Cinelatino for Germany; Juliana Costa, scholar with a Master’s degree in Education, whose research focuses on film and education, and founding member of the the Academia das Musas Movie Club; Dieison Marconi, a PhD student in communication studies at UFRGS and a researcher working at the intersection between cinema and genre studies, and artist, essayist and researcher Ali do Espírito Santo. Another new feature this year are the festival's Business Rounds, which are now open for registration until Nov 12 through the Cine Esquema Novo website. The rounds will take place on Nov 25-26, with players from Brazil and Germany. This initiative seeks original audiovisual projects such as full-length feature films, documentaries, animations and experimental films, as well as finished or finalized feature films. The event has is supported by RS Criativo and the Rio Grande do Sul State Government, which will host the events, scheduled to take place in the Sérgio Napp hall at the Mario Quintana Cultural Center, as well as by theMinistry of Foreign Affairs and the Professional Association of Cinematographic Technicians of the State of Rio Grande do Sul- APTC / RS. The following parties will be participating in the rounds, in search of projects and films: Angelika Ramlow, Arsenal Distribution project manager, Algiers Medeiros, partner / director of Olhar Distribuição, Letícia Friedrich, partner of production and distribution company Boulevard Filmes, and Paulo de Carvalho, partner of Autentika Films Berlin and organizer / artistic director of the CINELATINO Festival in Germany.
Two workshops are part of the event's schedule: Camera Cause - Audiovisual Creation for groups in social vulnerability, taught by Gustavo Spolidoro and Lucas Heitor, registrations for which have been closed, and the Working with 16-mm film in an artisanal fashion, offered by Luciana Mazeto and Vinícius Lopes. The Camera Cause Workshop is designed for people who belong or work with social projects and collectives assisting groups in social vulnerability, teachers and students from public schools, as well as the general public, providing reflections and practices in terms of audiovisual creation using their own cell phones. Created in 2018, with ten editions and eight lectures, this workshop generated more than 60 short films posted on social medial and aims at creating contents that can be used to promote the works developed by these groups, as well as their reality and causes. On Nov 25, at 2:00 PM, an exhibition of short films produced during this workshop will take place at Cinemateca Capitolio Petrobras, with free admission.
On Nov 25 and 26, filmmakers Luciana Mazeto and Vinicius Lopes will be giving the workshop titled Working with 16-mm film in an artisanal fashion at the Photography Laboratory of UFRGS’s Arts Institute. The workshop will cover simple, manual and experimental techniques for filming, developing and copying 16mm film. Filmmakers Luciana Mazeto and Vinicius Lopes explore the development of black and white negatives using caffenol, an environmentally-friendly and affordable solution that produces astonishing high-contrast images made from easily-found ingredients. Afterwards, participants will work on copying negatives by using the traditional cyanotype emulsion technique, applying the emulsion on the film and generating astonishing positive images in bluish hues, which are ready to be displayed and shown.
